If you look back at the mobs that brought down the Babri Masjid in 1992, you will notice the same phenomenon and demographics. The mobs constituted of the educated-unemployed, not the poor-destitute. So, a secular response to the neo-Hindutva project has to include an economic vision for jobs and growth for the Hindi heartland’s bulging youth population. If neither Modi nor his secular challengers can step up to the plate, we risk growing our own generation of sectarian, child-slaughtering semnopithecus entellus.
