If you only watch one video this month let it be this: Community Farming - It’s Not About Food. Those interested in nutrition, mental health, local foods, community, or sustainability may find this worth their time. In September I took a documentary photography class in Missoula, Montana. While researching subjects for my photo project I came across an organization called Garden City Harvest. It has grown tremendously since its start in 1996 and currently includes four neighborhood farms, numerous community gardens, farm to school programs, partnerships with youth programs and so on. During my short time there I was able to observe the hard and valuable work taking place at their Youth Farm. The week after I left Missoula this TED talk was given by Josh Slotnick, a co-founder of Garden City Harvest. His speech offers a brief history on why Garden City Harvest began and how it has transformed the lives of individuals and his community at large. Although my time at Garden City Harvest Youth Farm was brief, it gave me hope that truly life-giving and wonderful things ARE possible. Listen, learn, be inspired, share, go forth!
