If you read my post about visual computing, then you know I love companies/entrepreneurs who are trying new ways to take the every growing number of cameras and explosion in digital photos to develop new experiences. One such company is Mapillary and was started by my friend Jan Erik Solem Basically, Mapillary uses their smartphones and other devices like GoPro, and Garmin Virb to collect photos that are combined into a street level view. In less than a year Mapillary users have already mapped everything from streets and sidewalks to beaches and mountaintops in more than 60 countries, in total over 200,000 km of roads. They just launched a new iOS app. If you are in India or Brazil or some place where Googles car isnt going to show up, then this is a service to try out. Jan Erik should try and make this work with those drones and it could make things interesting. You can read rest of it on the company blog.
