If you see a veteran, please take a moment and say Thank you for your service! To that former service person, it will bring memories of standing watches import & at sea, at bases and on aircraft; it will remind them of cold nights on the quarterdeck or cool nights at a radar scope in C.I.C.; it will remind them of standing Honor Guard near the coffin of a fallen, assisting at schools overseas or teaching a lesson on shore duty. Other memories may include visits to foreign lands knowing that you are an Ambassador of those at home. Veterans may think about the food, people, souks (outdoor shopping markets), walks, dancing and, of course, drinking! Marching in a parade may come to mind, as well as laying a wreath at a Naval Memorial in Italy. Other service veterans may have worn a different uniform than mine, but it was all the same...to protect and defend the interest of the United States of America. Some of us took that oath one time; some of us took it many times. Know ye that your way of life is protected to a degree which may be hard for some people to comprehend. Know also that every shot from a ship, aircraft, tank, submarine or a rifle is made in defense of America...nothing more, nothing less. I am proud to have served for you. Derek L. Farthing, OSC(SW), U. S. Navy (Retired).
