If you speak in anger and hatred, instead of seeking understanding - TopicsExpress

If you speak in anger and hatred, instead of seeking understanding and true change, then you bear some responsibility for the actions of people who are moved by your words to take horrific actions. There have been many protestors who have peacefully asked that changes be made in the way things are handled, so that no unnecessary deaths occur. But there have been those who have violently called for an elimination of the police force, saying that there is no such thing as a good cop. (Because that’s always going to work out well.) There was a recent period where graduates of the police academy couldn’t find a job. Tight budgets, and a steady stream of applicants made it difficult for somebody wanting to become a cop to find a job. This has changed drastically in the past 5 years. Police departments around the country are begging for officers. (Albuquerque is advertising everywhere, which makes me wonder about them—either they’re getting good with web advertising, or they’re really, really desperate.) What happens when we can’t find anybody to join the police force? Cities would have no choice but to privatize it, because it’s not like anybody is going to allow the city to get away with out some kind of protection for their citizens. And privatization is going to cost a mint. So, in essence, only the wealthy will have police protection. And those officers would be responsible to a private company, not to a community—though they would most likely get paid better. There are problems within our justice system. There are laws that make no sense. There are bad cops, bad prosecutors, and bad judges. But the good cops hate the bad cops more than we do. And we’re responsible for the prosecutors and judges—they’re elected. I’m a judge’s daughter, and I know the Utah Highway Patrolmen in San Juan County are amazing men. The Sheriff I grew up with had a father who was Sheriff as well. And both are legendary in the Utah law enforcement community. (And I had such a crush on Rigby Wright.) This is my long-winded way of saying I stand with our policemen/women. And I ache for those who have been lost. We have sowed the wind, and reaped the hurricane. God help us all.
