If you think about it, literalism has been the most divisive way - TopicsExpress

If you think about it, literalism has been the most divisive way of interpreting scripture. Literalism as the one approach to the bible creates an atmosphere of the Bible says so! And Im right, youre wrong! Instead of there being fruitful, creative dialogue on the possible cultural, linguistic, and historical (and within these, phenomonological, allegorical, or hyperbolic) meaning of things in the Bible. There are some things that need to be taken literally, and the church by and large is united on those things, such as outlined in the creeds and in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. However even with a supposed inerrant text, we still dont have an inerrant translation, or an inerrant interpretation, demonstrated by the thousands of denominations within Protestant Christianity. Saying the Bible says! So youre wrong! Is really just using your own 21st century, western, literalist approach to scripture to demonstrate that you dont realize the far removed cultural and historical settings out of which these writings came, as well as the diverse methods of interpretation one could use to make sense of them.
