If you think this crisis is new -- the killing of Black and brown men by the same security forces who fail to investigate the killing and disappearance of women of color, and the failure of prosecutors to prosecute and juries to indict or convict the killers -- then you need to look deeper into history. The US and Canada were both founded on genocide. South Africa modeled its apartheid townships on the Canadian system of First Nations reserves. Police have been killing people of color in both countries as long as both countries have existed. As Walter Benjamin wrote -- The tradition of the oppressed teaches us that the ‘state of emergency’ in which we live is not the exception but the rule. We must attain to a conception of history that is in keeping with this insight. Then we shall clearly realize that it is our task to bring about a real state of emergency, and this will improve our position in the struggle against Fascism.
