If you travel to Mexico as an American (and look American), I - TopicsExpress

If you travel to Mexico as an American (and look American), I recommend you read this. A similar instance happened to someone I know but they were able to get money right away and free themselves and it was the Mexican Policia that were involved in the scam. 1300 Americans known kidnapped for Ransom in Mexico just in 2012. The numbers for 2013 are still being compiled, but 553 January through April of 2013. Many other Americans listed as missing but unknown if kidnapped or killed. THIS is why I do not go to Mexico anymore and will not return as it is a place where kidnap for ransoms are the norm, as most do not even make local news, much less national news. Most kidnappings do not make news as government covers them up to keep tourism high. FACT: There are more American kidnappings in Mexico than in Afghanistan, Colombia or Iraq!!! Do not think that the townspeople will help you because they fear for their own families lives and just ignore what is right in front of them. I enjoyed my time in Mexico in the 1990s and early 2000s but I would not return as the risk ratio is not worth the adventure. Go to Chile, Argentina, Bolivia and other great countries with lower risks. This one happened in Monterrey, a city where normally kidnappings do not happen, according to Mexican Authorities (who are extremely corrupt because cartel pays them bonuses for keeping quiet). Many flight crew I know will drop trip if we were assigned Mexico for long overnights. Keep in mind, there are many missing people that we are unsure if they were kidnapped or just in crossfire of cartel. You may survive but you will be permanently and emotionally scarred. Is it worth that risk. And yes, it happens extremely fast and just on the street.
