If you walk into my classroom, you will see a sign posted Excellence starts Now! Yes, change is a gradual process but we can not use that as an excuse to not expect or demand excellence of our leaders. I am not against celebrating small successes but I will not say I have done a good job if my students are not meeting benchmarks or performing competitively with their peers. I am a product of excellent teachers and excellent leaders. Excellence is the standard. If we are afraid to hold our leaders to the standard because we know them then what example do we set for our children? If this is just the beginning of a more aggressive and widespread change (as supporters of candidate Baraka argue), which we have yet to see evidence of, then why does his performance merit a promotion in responsibility to governance of an entire city? Where in any industry are you typically promoted based on pockets or islands of success when the larger whole is still woefully lacking? When is it accountability to abdicate a mission before comprehensive change has been achieved? In Newark we need to raise the bar and expectations of our leaders.
