If you wanna believe in something..believe in the power of love...That the power of love through acceptance whether its the person who changes their ways through the love and acceptance of others...whether they find it through the love and acceptance of a church or supportive groups or a very good friend. For I have seen that not punishment but reward is what operant psychologist at OSU Psyche labs used to train pigeons, chickens,etc to bowl, peck at piano keys...solve mazes, and do cool tricks. Through small steps and rewards...not beatings and social ridicule...though that should always be the last resort. Reward praise good behavior. Ignore...and disapprove of bad behavior. Decisively and consistently. Can you do that? Or is that info too much for ya? If you reward someone whether they are good or bad...only makes it harder for someone else to deal with em..later down the line. (teachers, judges, spouses, society in general) Why should they behave when they can misbehave and get their way just the same..without having to do anything for it nor be accountable for it. You can pray to Jesus but here on earth people like me and society will hold you accountable just the same....worry about right now.
