If you wanna win the lottery, you gotta make the money to buy a ticket! Was the motto of anti-hero Lou Bloom in last nights Nightcrawler. Now I was really excited for this film, there were cries for it to be film of the year, oscar predictions aplenty. Well I bought a ticket but I didnt exactly feel I won the lottery with Nightcrawler. I wanna start off by saying I had to put my own expectations to the side for this one, and I did, but it still didnt really strike me as an instant classic. The story follows the sociopathic freelance LA crime journalist Lou Bloom, played by Jake Gyllenhaal. Honestly? Lou is written as fantastically as hes played, cold, committed and frightening, willing to step on whoever it takes to get to the top, a man completely separated from his sense of right and wrong. If Gyllenhaal gets nominated for the best actor oscar I would not be surprised and it wouldnt be unjustified. Elsewhere in the film however everything was just a little bit... underwhelming. The score was nothing special and didnt do a whole lot to enhance the experience. The plot moved along at a reasonable pace but Id have liked it to be a bit bigger and grander. The cinematography was pleasing and although Ive never been in LA during the small hours of the morning I feel like it was captured really well, like I could have stepped through the screen and it wouldnt differ to what I was being shown. Its tricky to explain more of the films shortcomings without giving away plot details (something I avoid on here because Im a nice guy) but in summary Nightcrawler is a good film. 2014s best offering? No. One of 2014s best offerings? Yes. I dont know when Id be in the mood to watch this again but for now I think a reasonable 7.5/10 is about right.
