If you want to know why I truly LOVE fitness and boxing please - TopicsExpress

If you want to know why I truly LOVE fitness and boxing please read my story here: (thank you) To me, love is a choice and true love involves growth and sacrifice. My love for fitness and boxing began with a decision I made one night, almost 10 years ago to get in better shape and learn how to box. The story begins in April of 2005 at the infamous Margarita Mama’s in station square. Gabe Fischer and I went there, not to party and meet women but to watch a guy we knew and respected, Mark Daly fight in the Golden Gloves. I’ve known Mark and especially his trainer, Muscles since I was a kid so I was pumped to finally see him fight live after hearing so many good things about his work ethic and boxing ability. Lucky for us he was matched against this guy named Sammy. The entire crowd, us and Sammy’s fans were on edge the whole time as these two young men put on an amazing fight with back and forth action for 4 rounds. The intensity of the fight and the way Muscles got into the ring before the last round to inspire Mark with a quick motivational speech before the last round appealed to me. Almost immediately after the fight ended I found Muscles and told him I was going to win the Golden Gloves next year with him training me. He couldnt have taken me seriously; I was 231 pounds at the time. I couldn’t run a mile at the time. I mean I could jog a mile, but I couldn’t actually run one. In fact, I smoked cigarettes and ate fast food nearly every day. At the time it was a difficult for me to complete a round of boxing drills. The truth is that my workouts at that point in my life were inconsistent, maybe once a week and consisted entirely of meathead work: bench press, nose breakers, squats, heavy bicep curls is all I remember doing around that time. The day after I boldly proclaimed I would be a Golden Gloves champion I started changing my exercise habits and more importantly, I began to change the way I ate and approached my life. It turns out that boxing match inspired me to not only get fit and learn how to fight, it inspired me to work to become a better man. I kept my word and worked on my fitness every day, ate responsibly and did my best in every sparring session and in every opportunity I had to work the punch mitts with a trainer at South Park. In less than a year I went from 231 lbs. to 178 lbs. More importantly, I learned in that first year of practicing fitness and learning boxing what it was like to take responsibility for myself, keep my word and put forth my best effort every day. Small sacrifices. Over the years I have grown to love fitness and boxing because of the many lessons I’ve learned and the character I’ve built with them. In April of 2006 I knocked my opponent out cold to win the Golden Gloves championship in the good ‘ole Saddle Ridge bar at station square to cap my run at 3-0 that year. That night on my big win in I remember thinking that if I can change my life and my physicality so drastically in just one year than almost anyone can do something similar if they set their mind to it and get some quality guidance (like I got from Muscles and all the helpful people at South Park Boxing). It was that night, about a year after I committed to fitness and boxing that I decided that I wanted to help other people get healthier, more fit and reach their goals, whatever they might be. After that I fought a lot more amateur fights, finishing with a 24-12 overall record, and most importantly I returned to college and completed a B.S in Exercise Science, graduating with a 3.49 overall GPA that now, in part qualifies me to help other people. Here I am now, nearly a decade after making the original decision to get in shape and fight, living my dreams every day with a career as a personal trainer, a health-fitness advisor and as a professional boxer as well. I want you to know that you can change your life drastically in just one year’s time as well if you believe in yourself, put forth your best effort each day and find some good guidance. Fitness and boxing put me in position to grow as a person and be the best version of myself; I will forever love them for that. Fitness can do the same for you. If you’ve read this far I want to thank you and more importantly, I want to inspire you to become a stronger version of yourself and know that if you set your mind to something and take responsibility for yourself nearly anything is possible. Finally, if we have ever spent time together and I haven’t motivated you or inspired you in some way then I have done you a disservice, and I apologize. If you give me the opportunity, I will change that. But if I have motivated you or inspired you in some way then I want to thank you for making the choice to follow your inspiration. I love you all, especially those of you who also want to be the best version of themselves every day. It is through my original interest in, and commitment to fitness and boxing that I eventually found my passion for helping others with their fitness and personal healthcare. - Sam Suska
