If you want to save a life, and could afford a few months downtime, try helping this guy. Conditions: (1) compatible ABO blood group, (in this case, blood group O) (2) negative serology for hepatitis B and C virus, (3) no evidence of any acute and chronic illness, and (4) adequate CT volumetry of the liver graft for the recipient (40% of recipient standard liver weight) and liver remnant for the donor (30% of total liver volume). The risk for liver donation has not been thoroughly investigated. Professor ST Fan found in his series of 250 cases a complication rate of 18% and a mortality rate of 0.4%, with the unfortunate lady having an undiagnosed duodenal ulcer, complicated by duodeno-caval fistula.
