If you want your kids to have a competitive advantage in the work world as teens, they dont even need good grades. They just need to show up. On time. Have a good attitude. And stay off their screens. They will be ahead of 99% of their peers. If I had a retail business, I would have a hard and fast rule. No cell phone allowed during working hours. If I catch you emailing, texting or glancing at a phone while on the clock, you are fired. One warning, because Im gracious! One. After that, fired on the spot. Go work for someone who doesnt care about serving people with excellence. But not in my store. If you have time to text your friend, then you arent busy enough cleaning, restocking shelves, helping customers, giving eye contact and working. Today alone in three stores, I noticed employees distracted by phones. Why businesses allow that I have no idea. Teach your kids to control themselves and their screens. Oh, but that means you and I have to be able to do that as well. Ouch!
