If your broadband download speed is 45 mps, youve got a pretty fast connection, right? If youre getting it from Comcast, you may be paying about $70 for it. In Hong Kong, the speed is 500 mps, and it costs $35. Either the government is the internet service provider in Hong Kong or theyve got companies that compete. Here, youve got the choice of a phone company (usually only one) and one cable provider. Like it or lump it or suffer with Clearnet. I recall from high school that the Tennessee Valley Authority was formed under Roosevelt, not just to provide electricity to people in the South who had never had it before, but to also create a yardstick for how electrical service should be priced. Im all for capitalist competition, but when a service is the only game in town -- as Comcast is quickly becoming around the nation -- I think government should step in and provide some competition until some viable private competition comes along. And it should get back to making monopolies illegal, as it had before the Reagan years.
