If your car has fuel injection (likely since the industry moved away from carburetors in the late 80s/early 90s)…you dont need to warm up the engine more than 30 seconds on a cold day. (Obviously …make sure your windows are defrosted and free of snow.) We know you want to get into a nice warm car, but heres what the EPA has to say about idling for extended periods: When a car idles for more than 30 seconds, it has several negative effects, such as increasing air pollution unnecessarily, wasting fuel and money, and causing excessive wear or even damaging a car’s engine components, including cylinders, spark plugs, and the exhaust system. Contrary to popular belief, idling isnt an effective way to warm up most car engines. Todays automobile manufacturers recommend driving off right away and urge that drivers wait no more than 30 seconds to begin driving, even on the coldest days.
