If your child is a budding artist, be sure to mark your calendar and make plans to join us at Gallery One in Mentor next Friday evening for “Fold & Fly.” -Gallery One is hosting a fun FREE family event on Friday, Jan. 30 from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m., and everyone is invited. -Children’s book author Mary Lee Corlett and illustrator Sophie Cayless will unveil their new book, entitled Belle’s Wild Ride: The Artful Adventure of a Butterfly and a Cabbie. -The book tells the story of Belle, the butterfly, who lives in a 300-year-old painting and travels to the Cleveland Museum of Art, where the story takes place. -Author Mary Lee Corlett will demonstrate how to fold origami butterflies, and illustrator Sophie Cayless will demonstrate how to draw butterflies. Materials will be provided, and audience participation is encouraged! -Gallery One will exhibit the book’s original watercolor illustrations for interested collectors. Gallery One was voted “Best Art Gallery in the Cleveland Area” twice in a row, and this free program is one in a continuing series of special free events open to the community as we celebrate our 40th anniversary. The family-friendly gallery is wheel chair accessible with free parking. Both the author and illustrator are originally from this area. Author Mary Lee Corlett is currently an art historian and research associate at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. She worked at Gallery One years ago, followed by positions at The Cleveland Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the National Portrait Gallery. She has written about many contemporary American artists, and this is her second book. Sophie Cayless, a freelance illustrator who teaches drawing and painting, earned her degree in illustration from the Cleveland Institute of Art and Case Western Reserve University. A former park ranger and naturalist, she created artwork for park exhibits and publications including the book Beaver Tales for the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
