If your life is filled with scars, it is understandable that you would avoid situations where the scars might be seen or torn away. There is shame in one and pain in the other. Anger and avoidance become defences of choice and necessity. It can be hard to love and be loved living like that. It demands a huge amount of trust. I am thinking this morning of a survivor who said: I love my wife. I told her what happened to me only once and she held me while I cried...and we never mentioned it again. But she still holds me when I need to be held, and pokes me with her elbow when I need that too. Cause she knows. And she still loves me. He was 82 and she was 70, and they had been together almost 50 years.
