An 80% efficient furnace puts 80% of the fuel consumed into the house and 20% goes out the flue into the atmospher. A 96% efficient furnace puts 96% of the fuel consumed into the house and only 4% into the atmosphere. The EIA predicts that the average household will spend approximately $679 in natural gas home heating costs this winter. So, a 16% savings of $679 is $108 savings each winter. The price difference of $1000 between the 80% and the 96% will take aprox 10 years to break even. I suggest going with the 80% furnace. Also note, that 80% furnaces are due to be banded by Michigan Legislative Mandate soon, they had already extended the deadline to install these lower efficient furnaces. A 2 Stage furnace saves money by using 2 different BTU outputs rather than the single output that single stage furnaces use.
