If youre not paying attention to whats going on in NYC you need to start. The NYPDs contemptuous treatment of Mayor de Blasio has culminated in a virtual work stoppage: police officers have informally conspired to stop doing their jobs until their amorphous demands for support and respect are met. This is not the behavior of an democratic institution committed to serving the public trust. This is the behavior of a disgruntled paramilitary force in the early stages of a coup detat. NYPD has abdicated any pretense of protecting or serving the population that pays their salaries. They are, quite simply, in it for themselves. It was the killing of Eric Garner by police officers that set these events in motion. And yet, its not enough for the NYPD that the officer who killed Eric Garner was exonerated by a Grand Jury. The fact that New Yorkers protested the decision, with conditional mayoral support, is unacceptable to them. For them the appropriate posture of civilians--including the mayor--is submission.
