If youve read Tom Dorrances book True Unity then youll recognize this old barn. Heres a poem that Janie Tippett says is inspired by this beautiful old building. An Old Barn by Janie Tippett Built to last by early settlers who took great pride in their craftsmanship, barns speak to us. Scattered all over the county, they endure, long after the men who built them have passed on. In the dusty silences of their lofts and mows, the great horned owl is now the only visible inhabitant. If these cobweb-laced and dusty walls could talk, perhaps they would describe the comings and goings of the milkmaid, the sound of milk spattering into the pail; the meowing barn cats waiting for their frothy treat; sweaty men and boys forking hay in the loft for winter feeding; the smell of harness leather, meadow hay; manure, and horseflesh; the stomping of the draft horse hooves on the wooden floor; the jangling and slapping of leather as work horses are harnessed or a buggy horse hitched to a hack;’ the tap, tap, tap of the horseshoer’s hammer; the clang of the anvil and heat of the forge; the chore-boy’s whistling; a bawling calf; a horse muching oats; the warmth of animal bodies during winter snows; the buzzing of flies, and the scurrying of mice in summer.
