If youve seen my posts about my bands music or shows were putting on and you actually checked us out, listened to us, or came out to a show. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Youll never know how much that means. It means so much because we live in an age where everyone can take a couple pictures, make a facebook page and say Hey check out my band! And yeah, lets be real, this type of thing takes a very special kind of talent and skill to succeed, so naturally the majority of these bands are not good. This results in people seeing posts like mine about my music and skipping right over them because its just another kid in a crappy local band who wants me to listen to their crappy music or watch them be awkward on stage. This is a safe assumption for me. Ive experienced many times having a conversation with someone and telling them I play music. They say oh cool with minimal faked enthusiasm and leave the topic at that. Its when I take out my phone and show them my music that their eyes light up and I hear the second predicted response. Oh wow! You guys are actually really good! Some of them are even bold enough to be honest. When you first told me you were in a band, I thought it was just some garage band. Why? Because youve never heard of us? Because were not on the radio or TV? Do you think the bands that are on the radio started out that way? No its not a surprise that I have to show them my music and then they are impressed. Is that cocky to say? No, its frustrating. Talent is extremely watered down and under valued these days. I dont have time to be modest anymore. Im not a bad musician. I play good music, in a good band with other talented musicians, and its not fair that I get written off with so much as a glance. This isnt arrogance, I know my worth and Im not afraid to admit it. How would you feel if you sacrificed having a normally progressive life and poured all your time and all your money into your art that is your passion, spent months in the process of creating it, and then release the final product that you are unfathomably proud of ONLY to find that people would rather spend their time on the internet watching funny cat videos or liking peoples stupid selfies instead of appreciating your art. I watch it happen everyday. And to be clear, if you just see this as a whiny tantrum status, I hope you at least see that this isnt just for me, but for all my friends who create music or any other type of art. Im just as upset at witnessing their struggle. A struggle thats fueled by ignorance. I just wrote this to try to force a paradigm shift, or a chance in perspective. People are so quick to even watch a movie that someone spent two years crafting just to walk out of the theater saying that sucked. Please just appreciate art.
