If you’re like me, you feel absolutely wonderful after a vigorous workout. Intuitively, I’ve always known that working out keeps me at my peak, both physically and mentally. Anybody that works out is familiar with the “workout high” that they get as endorphins are released, but did you know that a recent study shows that exercise may actually improve the function of your brain cells? A study that was published in the American Journal of Physiology back in September 2011 showed that exercise increases the size and number of mitochondria in the brains of mice. The mice were subjected to running on a treadmill for up to 60 minutes a day, 6 days a week for 8 weeks. Mitochondria are the tiny chambers in cells that turn food into energy. Exercise enlarges and increases the number of mitochondria in your muscle cells which helps to increase your strength, speed and endurance. However, this research paper is the first to offer a logical explanation of how exercise improves memory. Until now, researchers thought that exercise improves memory and treats depression ONLY by causing the brain to release endorphins, morphine-like compounds that can improve mood. The release of endorphins does not explain the improvement in memory and brain function that we get when we are on a regular exercise program. Share this story with those that you love, and especially with those that are getting older as an incentive for them to start exercising regularly. It’s possible that exercise can treat the mental disorders, nerve damage, and dementia that sometimes happens with aging. Now we know that exercising not only flexes your muscles but also flexes your mental muscles! p.s. - For a good workout and diet program, be sure to get the FREE program that thousands are using to lose fat while gaining muscle in 12 weeks! => bit.ly/13sZFrS.
