If you’ve ever watched “The Sound of Music” and dreamed of your own The-Hills-Are-Alive moment, cavorting through a high mountain meadow bound on all sides by spectacular mountain scenery, then you need to make sure to hike the 14-mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail straddling the North Carolina/Tennessee line north of Carvers Gap. On the north end: three mountain balds in immediate succession, each offering stellar views. On the south end (near US 19E), Hump and Little Hump mountains, both offering more of the same. In between: more peaks as well as passages through intimate mountain flora. It’s possibly the most scenic stretch of trail in the Southeast. And it’s a stretch of trail that our #GetHiking! North Carolina’s Classic Hikes will be hiking in 2015. Each month, we’ll hike one of the state’s most beloved — though not always most traveled — trails. There’s a fee for the program; in return, you get much more than a hike. Subscribe and you’ll get our monthly enewsletter detailing every hike, with elevation profile, map, details about the hike, photos, resources to learn more about the natural and human history of the area, and more. We’ll have a kickoff event for #GetHiking! North Carolina’s Classic Hikes in January, but you can sign up for the program today.
