Ifugao town forms local AIDS council LAGAWE, Ifugao (PIA) --The local government unit here recently formed the Local AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) Council (LAC) for the prevention and protection of the people from the said disease. In his executive order, Mayor Ceasario Cabbigat reasoned out that the Human Immunodeficiency Virus(HIV)/AIDS is a disease that recognizes no territorial, social, political and economic boundaries for there is no known cure. “The gravity of the AIDS threat demands action to promote public awareness about the causes, modes of transmission, consequences, means of prevention and control through a nationwide education and information campaign, organized and conducted by the state,” Cabbigat explained. The LAC is chaired by the mayor and the municipal health officer as co-chairperson with the different heads of municipal offices, Sangguniang Bayan committee chairmen on Health and Tourism and representatives from other government and non-government offices as members. The LAC is tasked to plan, implement and set directions on HID/AIDS related programs and activities and institute measure to prevent and control HIV/AIDS. Furthermore, the council will also institutionalize LGU/non-government partnership by way of putting in place ordinances, policies and resources on HIV/AIDS programs and projects. Staff and personnel of the mayor’s office and the municipal health officer will act as the secretariat of the council.
