Ihedioha decries non-sitting of State Houses of Assembly, • Promises free, good quality, education WORRIED by the frequent shut-down of legislative activities in some State Houses of Assembly, including that of Imo, the Deputy Speaker of the House Representatives, Chief Emeka Ihedioha, has flayed the trend, saying denies the people the required law-making for good governance. The Imo state governorship standard bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who was a guest lecturer on the topic “Legislature as an Instrument of Social Change” at the 2014 Champion Newspapers Champion Better Society Lecture series, held at the Jesus Never Fails arena, Owerri, accused the Imo State government of fuelling the problems which manifests in the long adjournment., regretting that Imo State allegedly does not practice the rule of law and due process. “The best thing is to vote out this government that has put us in hall of shame. In Imo, today, there is no rule of law and due process. It is the product capacitated by lack of literacy. When and if I am elected governor of Imo State, we will not only have free education, it will be qualitative. When I become your governor, you will see true change” he maintained. On his promise for social change, Ihedioha said it was anchored on good governance, adding that the Seventh Assembly of the National Legislature currently in place, has been playing pivotal roles in 15 years. At the event attended by eminent Nigerians, including the publisher of the paper, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyawu, the immediate past Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Maurice Iwu, the Commissioner for Information in Anambra State, Tony Oyima, representing the state governor, Chief Willie Obiano; the Abia State governor, Chief Theodore Orji, represented by Chief Tony Agbazuere, some members of the House of Representatives, past and present officials of the paper, Ihedioha promised Imo people real, free and qualitative education if elected governor in 2015. He said there was nothing to redeem Okorocha’s so-called free education in the state which, has further depreciated the intelligence capacity of the pupils and students and now finds Imo scoring just 46 per cent in the 2013 assessment of the West African Examination Council (WAEC), examinations, while Anambra took 67 per cent. Speaking on issues of the legislative activities in the House of Representatives, he scored the lower chamber high, stressing that he chaired the ad hoc committee on the New Legislative Agenda, which placed the 360 constituencies in a better legislative representative stead. According to him, having served for about 12 years in the Green Chamber, the product of the draft produced and subsequent deliberations held by the representatives helped in topmost quality legislation which is in line with the International Best Practices, deepening democracy. Ihedioha also listed roles of the legislature in the lower chamber to include investigative, appropriation powers, power of confirmation and screening among other complimentary roles. He said he was proud of contributing in sponsoring seven out of 110 bills which were passed and assented to law in the eight –year rule of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo. He also said he was satisfied by his performance and many human-friendly bills and laws during the time he chaired Marine Transport Committee in the lower chamber. On the current bloodshed in some parts of the country, Ihedioha appealed to those involved to stop and allow peace to reign as President Goodluck Jonathan was prepared to offer quality administration to the nation.
