Ihejirika calls for governors, military s The immediate past Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, has called for synergy between military and Governors to effectively checkmate insecurity. Ihejirika made the call during a civic reception organised in his honour by the Abia Government in Umuahia on Friday. “Governors and political leaders must synergise with the military to tackle the security challenges in the country’’, he said. He said the security situation in Abia was an indelible example for other states and called on leaders to emulate the collaboration between Gov. Theodore Orji and the army. The former army chief remarked that the collaboration had led to the peace and security in the state. He thanked God for seeing him through his 39 years sojourn in the army and expressed gratitude to President Goodluck Jonathan for appointing him to serve the nation. In his remkark, Orji expressed happiness that Ihejirika served the nation with the highest commitment and loyalty. He thanked he president for erasing the unpopular belief that no Igbo man could attain the leadership of the Nigerian army after the civil war. He thanked the former COAS for attracting development to his area. He listed part of the projects to include the Military School of Languages and the 14 Brigade of the Nigerian Army at Ohafia, among others. Orji said that the former army chief also helped to enlist many indigenes in the army, adding that, “he helped to make Abia one of the safest states in the country.’’ The ceremony was attended by the wife of the governor, Odochi, Dep. Gov. Emeka Ananaba, Abia Speaker, Chief Ude Oko-Chukwu and top government functionaries. The current COAS, Lt.-Gen. Kenneth Minimah, was represented by the General Officer Commanding 82 Div. Enugu, Brig.-Gen. Shehu Yusuf. Highlight of the occasion was the conferment of “Dike Abia’’ (Strongman of Abia) on Ihejirika by the Abia Council of Traditional Rulers. He dedicated the title to his commanders and soldiers “who showed absolute loyalty and support in the midst of daunting challenges.’’ (NAN)
