@ Ike what is the significance of holi? What is its historical significance? Colors have great significance, holi has a history embedded in our genes. It is sub-continent’s festival of festivals it is the kings of all festivals or sartaaj-e-jashn, holi in essence is not only a festival of colours but it is the celebration of our life itself. Holi different colours represent different stages of our existence, the up and downs of our living, colors makes you think as Sahir Ludhianavis penned in Meri Pahali Holi: “Zindagi ke her rang ko chand lamhaat mein dekh liya Meri Pahali Holi ne mujhe falsafana bana diya” I saw all colours of life in a few moments/ My very first Holi made me a philosopher. Emperor Akbar would come out of the palace and any commoner could play holi with him throwing colours on the emperor of India. Even puritanical Aurangzeb could not stop people from celebrating Holi on the streets, please remember well since desert had no colors and only the riparian societies grew plants and flowers of different colors, therefore they have these celebrations of natural colors representing the basic constituents of life. Holi is our tradition, since the weakest in the sub continental society converted we sacrificed their culture intricacies to the norms of desert, in Iran the Ayatollahs even today celebrate Nauroze. They maintained their cultural ties with the pagan past. We celebrate our festivals too alas with only one colour that is sacrificial red.
