Ill Met by Moonlight was a book by W. Stanley Moss about his exploit with Paddy Leigh-Fermor on Crete in WW2, when they kidnapped General Kriepe right under the noses of the garrison, and evaded heavy searches for 18 days, before being withdrawn by Royal Navy motor launch to Egypt. The SOE operation was completely successful, and the film by the same name as the book, starring Dirk Bogarde, was seen by me as a teenager, prompting many daydreams about martial glory in war. Stanley Moss unfortunately died after the war, but Paddy, the Cretans, and General Kriepe, were reunited in this Greek TV program. Paddy recently died aged 96.
