Ill admit, even I was taken aback by the similarities of these two images. Both images are from the European ensemble means. However, the first valid for January 26th of this year, the second valid on January 25th of last year. How incredible is this? The ensembles are suggesting a pattern developing this year that is almost identical to the pattern last year in late January. Things absolutely will change, but the general idea is for a strong ridge developing along the west coast of North America into Alaska, with a deep trough developing in the Great Lakes. Bottom line, those who are harping on the idea of a warm end to January will be sorrily mistaken when its all said and done. While specifics cannot be looked at this far out, a pattern like this could yield bitterly cold temps like we saw early last January. The snowfall threat is less certain and I could see it going either way. Regardless, Ill continue watching this in the days to come, the end of the month could be a rough one!
