Ill admit to writing and editing and doing photography and a number of other things for free at times, but its always been because I believed in the cause or the subject or the person. And because I liked doing it. And Ill even confess to asking people to work for free back in the day. But that was for shoe-string publications where no one got paid. The trend talked about in this article is ubiquitous and is called a number of different things to disguise what it really is. Its almost inevitable as many newspapers, magazines, online publications and the rest of the media are disappearing and the rest are scrambling for an ever-increasingly shrinking pot of dollars. But its also the death of real journalism as real reporters are tending bars because no one can afford to pay them to do what the news media is supposed to do. This trend is exactly why I rarely trust any news source anymore. Especially the online sites that shout sensationalism and distort reality for the sake of shock... And how can any magazine possibly maintain a basic standard of quality with so many writers to edit? The answer is the only one that makes sense: it cant...Of course, Entertainment Weekly will be making plenty of money on the deal — if it wasnt, it wouldnt be doing it — but its contributors havent been deemed worthy of even the smallest slice of that pie.
