Ill be down in Flanarys tomorrow night from 7:30 to 10:30pm or thereabouts. Come out if you can and bring your friends and relations :) This is a song called McAlpines Fusiliers. It was written by Dominic Behan. I first heard The Dubliners sing it many years ago. I slowed it down a bit and put the poem after the first verse. I wanted, in my own way, to convey what could be, and often was, the loneliness and isolation of an immigrant among immigrants. I saw Doolin play The Rocky Road to Dublin in the Coleman Center in Gurteen over the summer. Their version of the song presented a progressively frightening journey that I hadnt realized before and it made me see the song in a very different light. The band inserted an instrumental solo before the last verse that portrayed the immigrants emotional experience as nightmarish. It really is an excellent version. Youll find it if you google the band and song. Its on a video that was taped in Central Park that is about 9 minutes long. Anyway, I hope you like this version of McAlpines. Its in no way better than others just a bit different maybe.
