Ill never forget being 16 years old and saving up the money for my first car from my part time job at Janney Tractor. A 1968 Ford 2 door Fairlane six banger with 69,000 miles from Noffsinger Motors for $795. It actually WAS a trade-in from a little old church lady; it looked like new and the plastic sleeves were still on the seat belts because she never used them. She had bought the car new and didnt order it with the radio option!! Of course, I had spent every penny I had on the car- so I didnt have any money left for a radio. But, my Dads friend Charlie Young down at Youngs Appliance told me to come on down and see him, and he sold me a radio, a Craig 8 track player, and some Pioneer window shelf speakers, and let me pay for them as I could...no interest....$5 or $10 every couple of weeks. Hed scribble my payment in a notepad he carried in his shirt pocket. LOL Thanks Charlie! And sometimes, on Friday night, George Janney would tell me to pull my car around to the back of the tractor shop and fill up my car out of the store gas pump for the weekend. Road trip!! I was pretty hard on tires, too. George noticed I was running baldies and sent me down to Wiebe tire shop on South Main where I was able to get 4 recapped mudgrips for $5 each on the store account (supposed to be farm implement tires not for highway use). Deep rubber all around for $20!! Ran em over all the Flint Hills gravel I could find and had em over 100 mph on many occasions and they never came apart!! LOL Thanks George!! Thanks El Dorado!!
