Ill own this and say that a bit of why road bike sales are down - TopicsExpress

Ill own this and say that a bit of why road bike sales are down nationally is due to the Lance backlash. People just arent into road riding anymore as many will confess. Its been mainly male consumers in their 30s-40s, already owning a road bike that is about 10 years old. They were itching to get a new bike 2-3 years ago but Lances ommission of guilt to Oprah on national television, caused the bubble to burst. Disassociation by the end user. That being said, those male consumers who might have bought a new road bike have been buying $2200 29r mountain bikes. Dealers I talk to claim thats the demographic and price range theyre seeing sales activity. Women are buying road bikes but let me clarify that the drop in sales Im seeing on the east coast are for aluminum framed bikes with Claris - 105 build groups by men. Secondly, that age group of male riders are showing up more often for the CAT 4/5 cyclocross races. The growth is obvious in my area. I speak with the racers, take notice of their age and ask why the purchased what they are riding and where they are riding. Its mountain bikes and cross bikes. Yea, you can blame the downward slide of sales on the economy or the increased amount of rain, this side of the Mississippi. Id rather blame it on the dopers.
