Illinois has more nuclear reactors than any other state (14). Many of these reactors have long-standing well-documented safety issues. Although Illinois has unique statewide monitoring and inspection systems – only the NRC can resolve them. Local and state officials can monitor the reactors but they have no control over safety at the plants. The NRC has consistently failed to exercise this authority as a result of which Illinoisans are exposed to unnecessarily high risks from these plants. U.S. lawmakers have debated for decades about where to put all the spent fuel generated by all of the nation’s nuclear plants. Dumps for spent fuel remain dangerous for thousands of years. Illinois has been targeted for this honor. Please attend even if you choose not to speak. A strong turnout is important!
