Ilm of Dunya? ilm of akhirah? There is a very unhealthy craze nowadays about seeking ‘Ilm. Nearly every other email in my inbox is about Ilm this, Ilm that, Ilm extravaganza, Ilmfest, etc. Yet, how much of this Ilm gained is beneficial is a question that remains unanswered. And by beneficial Ilm I do not mean the Ilm with which one can impress his friends, or make oneself feel good that ‘I gained some Ilm from some Shuyukh, mashaAllah!’, but Ilm that actually gets translated into actions. The fact that our voluntary sector continues to struggle for doers, whilst such large numbers of people flock to these so-called Ilm seminars, shows that Ilm is not being gained to put to practical use but for other purposes. To me, the one who works day and night for charitable causes to further the interest of Islam and Muslims is much more knowledgeable than the entertainer ‘Shaykh’ who goes up and down the country delivering seminars, let alone his fans who he mints his money of.
