Im 12-13 years old in 71. Watching this movie at the drive-in with my family. I had never been anywhere other than a couple of train rides to Mississippi as a younger child. And here is the first scene: Its NEW YORK! And Im seeing it from the sky! And I am about to be introduced to my first movie hero! This scene represented NYC to me as a kid--I know its just a movie but still--I know you get my drift here. This will always be my most favorite movie....period. When I look back at it now and think about the multi-million dollar budgets it takes to make movies today and I imagine what puny-ass budget and resources Gordon Parks must have had when he did this! I am even more in aw. The first scene set the pace perfectly. In my mind this movie is a work of art unto itself. And then theres the SOUNDTRACK......... I spent 7 and 8th grade at Live Oak Middle school. 3 blocks from my house. I played clarinet from fourth grade through high school. The year I went to the 8th grade Live Oak discontinued its 9th grade program, so we became the big kids that year! The main goal of the band class that year was to play the Theme from Shaft as good as the 9th grade class played it the year before---- all the way through without anyone messing up! LOL!!! The first time we made it through we gave ourselves a standing ovation!!! When I started 9th grade at a new school (high school) the band director had charts from Southern Universitys marching band. One of the charts was Aint No Sunshine(Bill Withers). It turned out to be the very first song I ever soloed on. The solo was the I know I know I know part. On clarinet no less. The other music in those charts consisted of Earth Wind and Fire and...The Shaft Soundtrack. I dont even think of Shaft as a movie anymore.
