Im Afraid I have to announce another death in the family. In 2001 - TopicsExpress

Im Afraid I have to announce another death in the family. In 2001 (9/11 actually) We took in a stray minivan and gave it a new fanbelt. It gave us many years of mediocre service and a few exciting roadside engine cutoffs and belt breakages to the point that my wife refused to drive it. The New van (it never did get a name that stuck) never failed to mark its spot before getting angry one day and trying to run me over. After some serious work with a sledge hammer and a bit of luck finding a new back door at the junkyard it re-emerged as The new old van 3 water pumps, an alternator, 2 batteries, 4 axles, struts shocks 5 sets of rotors 2 sets of rear drums, 20 gallons of atf+4 at least a dozen fan belts, 160,000+ later(it started at 113k) It had a massive hernia going up a hill outside of Philpott lake and lost 3rd gear. After reading how the solenoid pack can cause a shift into neutral problem I ordered one... Today, during exploratory surgery before installing it, I found the transmission pan full of bits and chunks like fools gold and a few metal bits that indicate a BAND has most likely departed this mortal coil (bad pun). I havent decided yet if it will be recycled or just turned into another farm use vehicle, but the cost of replacing the transmission is more than the old thing is worth, as well as a risky investment considering the age of the engine and other problems it has. Im somewhere between euthanasia(recycling) and just using it around the house considering it has a longer bed than the stump, my current around the house vehicle. It runs better and the windows, radio and ac still work too. Somehow I doubt it will take to tree bashing as well as the older model though, despite its superior experience on the subject.
