Im Laurelton, Queens from birth until [about] 5 years old. From 5 until 13 I lived on this magnificent Island - my formative years. It was like a wonderland to me and my family. Me and mom moved back to Laurelton when I was 13 and have been here ever since. But I wouldnt be the person I am today (for better or for worst) if not for Roosevelt Island. I was exposed to almost EVERY culture on the face of this planet. All on a two mile Island where the residential area was about two square city blocks (hard to explain for those that have been there). We had every class of people.. As this mini documentary says, at 6 or 7 years old, we were able to go outside and play - spanning our residential area without parental supervision. As kids, Buddy Hackett handed out Tuscan Pops (when he/they were popular) because his son lived in Rivercross (one of the apartment buildings). You could go to the only restaurant at the time (the Green Kitchen) and see Thelma and Michael from the TV show Goodtimes dining right next to you. They made movies on the island which enabled you to walk outside of your building and meet Sylvester Stallone. If you were into it, you could write graffiti with Daze, Dred66, Baron 357, Rep105, Manse (Gabriel Cohen) and Masker4Life (me) and I was definitely into that. I can go one and on, but you get the drift. I fell into the good crowd, the bad crowd and every crowd in between and Im better off for it! I love THA ROC and Ill always represent!! Big shout out to Nataki Montgomery for finding this video (love you baby!). And a special honorable mention to the greatest DJ in the world, the Mayor of Roosevelt Island Grandmaster Dee aka Drew Gmd Carter!!
