Im a bit appalled by some of the things that Ive seen on news feeds recently that were uncalled for. One is allowed their opinion and the free speech to express it, but I think its a bit over the line to go after the appearance of the First Lady and her children. Whats up with that? Its hatred unprovoked? Where is this coming from? Somebody or some thing(s) is fueling this hateful language. If you would have asked me 19 years ago when I went to South Africa on a teacher study abroad program if we were maturing as a nation and a world, I would have agreed, then. After all, we were celebrating the end of colonialism and egalitarian principles that were emerging around the world (and here at home). Im not so sure we are exhibiting the attitudes and behaviors of a maturing nation. Id like to think that the voices that Im hearing through social media that spread hate are part of a very vocal minority, but thats not what the polls are showing. There is a resurgence in hateful language and actions aimed at those who dont prescribe to the ideology of that vocal minority. This is sad. Negativity sells and then is reproduced through echo chambers where people only need to tune in to validate their own hate. Id say to those people, use your tuner on the radio and flip the channel from those places where loud obnoxious voices originate. Those sources are fueling hate and disrespect aimed at those who dont prescribe to ones own political party, ideology, and in extreme cases culture. My favorite Nelson Mandela quote from his autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom, sums up my feelings about the resurgence in hateful language and behaviors toward each other. “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.” I would hope that people on here would think before they post, then rethink the spirit in which you are posting before they click the post button. I hope its not too much to ask for people to search their souls to find the good in people instead immediately heading to the lowest common denominator in their nature. There is no excuse for typing those things and then hide behind the guise of not caving into political correctness. What you type, what you say, how you act, and how you react reflects exactly who you are and who youve DECIDED to be. Rant over......
