Im a bit bloody sick of seeing people crap all over the ice bucket - TopicsExpress

Im a bit bloody sick of seeing people crap all over the ice bucket challenge. Do you know HOW HARD it is for fundraisers and people working in charities to firstly create awareness and secondly to actually raise money. I saw this IGNORANT post in my feed. And I am sharing it to hopefully help people understand a little bit about charities and how they work. Having worked as a fundraiser and in the fundraising sector for a bloody long time I can assure you that the 10% that goes towards paying people does not pay for cars or high salaries. It is common knowledge that fundraising is one of the hardest jobs you can do and generally people do it because they want to help, most definitely not for the money. Should the fundraisers not be paid? It costs money to run campaigns: printing of letters, postage etc. how is the message supposed to be gotten out? How are the fundraisers supposed to ask for donations? Are they to rely on word of mouth? When I see posts like this which attacks the fundraisers and charities rather than offering support or even to volunteer their time which BTW most fundraising organisations would not exist if it was not for their volunteer workforce I really do shake my head. I agree 7% is not a lot to put into research but programs are probably programs that support those living with the disease and their families that are affected by it. My friend died last year from MND, he was 39, he had a small child and a wife and a family who loved him very much. When I would visit him, he could barely speak, he could only show me the pain through his eyes, it broke my heart, he was devastated, he did not want to die but he did, just 2 years after his diagnosis. The next time you feel like saying how sick you are of the ice bucket challenge think about the good that it has done. Its raised money. Its created awareness and maybe it will take that 7% research funds and make it 25%. Anything that creates awareness is a good thing. If you dont want to see the challenges then click on your mate who is posting and simply unfollow. Pretty simple.
