Im a child of Shriners Hospital but Im bothered by the new commercial with a mother saying, They made my child normal again. Why does walking, not having deformities, etc., equate with normality? Can I not be normal from a wheelchair? What IS normal anyway? I suppose I was raised differently because I cant get my head around this constant need for normality. Surgeries and therapy should be used with the goal of improving the quality of life, increased mobility, and lessening pain. Using language like make my child normal around the child is going to damage that child mentally. Trust me. I know what Im talking about. Be careful of what language you use around disabled children.
