Im a geek, but never have been that technical. Lately started looking into the actual technical abilities of Microsoft Azure, and finally learning what a virtualization service does. This thing is pretty amazing. You can pretty much write all types of programs using SDKs for traditional programming languages hosted by Microsoft, as well as third party software like PHP, node.js, etc. Azure does things like runs Visual Studio inside of a Virtual Machine, and makes it so if you are trying to change html or other code in a website, you can actually change it live by opening up the site, checking the source code, changing the source code and autopopulating the change. To see it happen live is pretty incredible. I guess for most geeks they use to have to work from the original code, redeploy and republish, but in Visual Studio inside Azure, you dont have to stop and start anything. You just go on the fly. Thats pretty cool.
