Im a long-time fan of a site called Spirituality & Practice, whose founders—Mary Ann and Frederic Brussat—offer rich resources from a variety of wisdom traditions. A few years ago, I was surprised to find myself on their list of Living Spiritual Teachers. I wasnt surprised to find myself on a list of the living—though there are days when I wonder about that!—but to find myself on a list of spiritual teachers. My self-definition is simple: I was Born Baffled. As a result, Ive spent many years reflecting, writing, and speaking to probe into my bafflement. But every time I break through to a bit of clarity, I discover another layer of bafflement. As far as I can tell, its bafflement all the way down! I mean, what kind of teacher is that?! A few weeks ago, I learned that Spirituality & Practice had chosen thirty folks from their Spiritual Teachers list—some of whom are still with us, some not—and named them as Wise Elders. This surprised me all over again, for two reasons: Im really not all that old (ahem...), and people who know me well are more likely to call me a wise guy than wise. Still, Im grateful to the Brussats for thinking of me and surrounding me with very good company, among whom are several of my revered mentors and exemplars. By clicking on the image below, you can learn about some truly wise people. But if bafflements your thing, you know whose photo to click on! P.S. If youre as baffled by American politics as I am, please check out my latest book, Healing the Heart of Democracy: The Courage to Create a Politics Worthy of the Human Spirit at tiny.cc/7vmpqx. Thanks!
