Im a mom of 4 with twin girls that are one month old, a 2.5 year old son and a 4 year old daughter. I have breastfed/pumped for all of my kids and the hackathon has really resonated with me. This post isnt directly related to improving the pump, but I moved to Dubai with my husband in 2010 when my daughter was 2 months old. I was not working while in the Middle East, so my daughter and I would shop and pick up food for the day as part of our routine. I was breastfeeding my daughter exclusively at the time. I felt totally at ease knowing that at the mall (which also had a large grocery store inside it) there were these lovely nursing lounges for moms that were breastfeeding. Built into the mall were these first-class facilities for mothers with changing tables for changing diapers and a few small rooms with a baby theme and a comfortable chair for breastfeeding with a privacy door that you could shut while you were nursing or pumping. There were a few of them in the mall, scattered around on each level and in different wings, similar in terms of restroom availability and placement. They were also quite clean and designed to be sort of a spa-like design (see pictures I took below). The idea of the nursing room made perfect sense to me: it was well-utilized, it was serving a need, and everyone was benefiting without needing to be seen. Moms could go to the mall without ever fretting about finding a suitable place to nurse/pump. We moved back to Boston in 2011 and Ive yet to see or hear of a similar setup anywhere in the US. Maybe after improving the pump we can work on improving other aspects of the pumping/breastfeeding experience for moms...
