Im a naturally curious person. Have been all my life. It drives my wife and stepson crazy because Im inclined to strike up a conversation with random strangers no matter where we are. Yeah, you dont want to sit next to me on an airplane. But heres what Ive found out: people like talking about themselves. And as important, they just like talking in general, but, also, like most people, they wont be the ones to start the conversation. Ive made more friends, contacts and connections in all kinds of places. Typically, the strategy is to find an opener - identifying something common at the moment: Geez, this line sure is long! or Wow, I hope those Rockies can start winning! My kids dont even want to go to the games! And then, once youve started the conversation, you can start asking about the other person. Do you have kids?, What do you do for a living? or, Are you from Colorado? Once the ball gets rolling, you can find out all kind of information and before you know it, youve found some kind of connection or common interest/friend, etc. and they are asking about you as well. For job seekers, it is really important to let go of the introvert and master the art of the 5 minute conversation. Sure, some folks might politely (or rudely) blow you off, but, more than not, youll find yourself opening up a new network of connections you never had before.
