Im against increasing taxes, and increasing the size, scope, and role of Government. I know that many of my Libertarian friends will disagree with me on this, but it has to be said. The current proposal to legalize marijuana in Mississippi increases taxes and increases the size, scope, and role of Government. It does. There is no arguing this point. The ballot initiative is worded to accomplish this very thing. Will it stop the senseless arrest of thousands of people? Sure it will. Will it stop the incarceration of people that have harmed no one? Yep, itll do that too. Will it help ease our overcrowded prisons? Yep, without question. Will it give the State Legislature more money to spend on their grand schemes? Yes, it will do that too. I am not arguing those points. I am only suggesting that there is a way to accomplish those things, without increasing the size, scope and role of Government, and without increasing taxes. Simply decriminalize it and treat it no differently than a pair of socks or an ear of corn. The State Legislature could do this with one simple Bill. It is no longer illegal to possess, use, buy, sell, or grow marijuana. BOOM! This accomplishes all of our goals, and does not increase the size scope and role of Government, and it does not increase taxes. It alleviates over crowded prisons. It stops the police from accosting you on the street because their dog winked at you. It helps preserve the protections listed in the Bill of Rights. It also increases the money that the State Legislature can spend on their grand schemes, by allowing regular sales taxes to be applied to that sale (taxes that they are now missing out on) Like I said, I know that many of my libertarian friends have gotten behind this ballot initiative, and they are working to see it through. I want them to understand that if this initiative passes, you will have had a hand in increases taxes, and increasing the size, scope, and role of Government. Something that we, as libertarians, should oppose. I once told a very popular Senator in this State, that I would never cast my ballot for someone that voted to increase taxes. I stand true to this pledge.
