Im alarmed to learn that brain-eating amoeba have been found in a nearby parishs drinking water -- 30 miles from here! Today the parish (county) began a 60-day chlorine treatment of the water. It directly impacts 12,500 people in one Water District. The amoeba enter through the nasal passage and not through the stomach. The amoeba emerge in hot temperatures when the water treatment is below state standards. The previous owner of this house did a couple things right. He installed a whole-house salt filtration system, and a kitchen reverse osmosis filtration system. I use the reverse osmosis, but have not used the salt system even though I had both inspected soon after I moved in. Also the fridge has a water filter. Tomorrow Ill empty Susies wading pool for the season, and Ill resolve to use only filtered water in the kitchen until the temps ease up.
