Im all for people paying for music! I do so all the time. I even purchase compact discs still. You remember cds right? I dont really have an opinion either way when it comes to Taylor Swift the musician. I respect her as an artist although I dont actively listen to her music on purpose. In regards to her business, I believe she is as shrewd as they come. Anyone who thinks that she pulled her music down from Spotify for the sole purpose of trying to get people to pay for her songs is being duped. There is a constant negotiation going on between the streaming services (Spotify being the largest next to youtube) and the major labels. There is also a rumor that Taylors label, Big Machine, which is under contract with Universal Music Group for one more Taylor Swift album after 1989, is up for sale. Both of those things play heavily into Taylors decision to pull her music down from Spotify. Perhaps good business but what about her fans? According to a large enough number on twitter for it to matter, some of them dont seem to be so pumped. There are those out there like me, who pay monthly for a subscription to Spotify. I believe in the service and also believe that I am contributing to the artists by doing so with my 10 bucks a month. As I said, I still purchase cds and a lot of vinyl. I think thats an important piece to preserving the culture of the music. We cant be the generation who lets everything an artist goes through in order to be inspired, create and release music be equaled to just a click on a key pad. That said, I also purchase music from time to time on iTunes. The availability of music everywhere, for a consumer like me, is awesome! I dont believe that Taylor pulled her catalog off of Spotify as a way to stand up to the streaming industry and to try and get people to buy more music to own. I wouldnt be surprised in the slightest if Big Machine and or Universal Music paid for a portion of the estimated two million copies sold this week. (lets see how far the 2nd week sales drop off is) Taylor did what business minded folk do, she positioned herself to capitalize off the leverage she has being the biggest American musician today. My prediction is that her catalog of music ends back up on Spotify sooner than what her reasoning has lead us to believe. Big Machine sells for a lot of money and Universal inks a better deal for Vivendi with Spotify. None of this unfortunately, will contribute to the culture music being preserved.
