Im always on the hunt for mention of the passenger pigeon. In Volume 8 of The Book of Knowledge, The Childrens Encyclopedia, copyright 1911-1912, I found this: Another bird that formerly was to be seen in the central part of the country in enormous numbers every summer was the wild or passenger pigeon. It is now extinct; and its story is so well known that it need not be repeated here. The year 1912 may or may not have seen the very last of the wild pigeons, but whats so interesting is that apparently, even then, a childrens encyclopedia didnt feel it was worthy of much more than scant mention. A well-known story certainly faded into obscurity in far less than a century. Its only now, 100 years later, that were looking at the extraordinary life of these birds once again.
